World Around Us

This learning area is comprised of Science & Technology, Geography and History. It is organised into 4 inter-related strands:

Strand 1 Interdependence

Strand 2 Movement and Energy

Strand 3 Place

Strand 4 Change over time

The school had a successful bid to release one of its teachers to be trained as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) teacher by the WELB. This teacher trained various schools including St.Patrick’s Primary School Mullanaskea to develop the skills and concepts of STEM. She has now returned full time to the school where STEM initiatives are at the forefront of the TWAU syllabus.

Practical science lessons are carried out in all classes each week. The children have become proficient in acquiring both the skills, concepts and language associated with Science.

Geography and History are mainly taught through topic work. The staff has recently revised its entire scheme of work in this area. There are various opportunities to participate in school trips which support the work carried out in these areas.

The school has also bronze and silver awards for its endeavors in ecology. Further to this we have since achieved the Gold award and the Green Flag. Such initiatives include having an eco-council, monitoring electricity output, having a kitchen garden which is planted with produce and used by the school etc.
