Social Media Warning
Tuesday 20th April 2021
Dear Parent,
It has co me to my attention that children have been misusing their online gaming at home. Some of these games allow the children to explicitly communicate with each other. Whilst this is not a direct school problem I feel it is my duty to let you know about this.
I have received some phone calls from parents stating that different children are saying and writing insulting comments to each other at home and also very insulting comments directed at children’s families. Whilst we cannot police what happens online at home, I fully understand that the children have to come to school the next day and continue with their class relationships. This makes it very difficult after receiving insults.
I ask you to please manage what your child accesses at home and communicates to another person. It is in the interests of all concerned, including the child sending the insults. I have spoken to the older children and I understand that the cause is a high degree of immaturity. However, the children also have to understand the seriousness of this and its implications. Whilst they believe they are old enough to participate in this level of social media they are certainly not mature enough to cope with the fallout.
My Very Best Wishes,
Ms. O’Neill.
